Association & history
Run by parents – since 1997
The Rheinpiraten are an association – run by the parents whose children are cared for here. That’s not a formality, but the reason this daycare is the way it is.

The association
Sponsor
The association as sponsor
The members of the association are the parents. From among them, the board is elected, which manages the business, represents the association legally and is responsible for staff, administration and finances.
The head of pedagogy is responsible for the educational work and compliance with legal requirements. Together, the sponsor and the staff represent the daycare as a service organisation run at association level.
Educational partnership
Parents: hand in hand
Cooperation with parents is regulated by law in § 9 KiBiz – but for us it’s about more than the regulation. We seek a cooperative educational partnership based on trust and close exchange.
Parents are seen as the experts on their children. When parents feel at home with us, it’s easier for the children to settle in.
Parent service
20 hours a year
Every family contributes 20 hours a year – for maintenance, improvements and everything that keeps this daycare running. We see parent service less as a chore and more as a chance to get involved and get to know the community.
Anyone who wants to get even more involved can be elected to the parents‘ council and accompany the educational work.
Our history
1997
The founding
Die Rheinpiraten e. V. was founded in 1997 as a parent initiative – with the aim of offering professional and loving full-day care for children aged one to ten. For parents who want or need to work, and for children who need more than supervision.
2004
Bilingual
Since 2004 we have been working bilingually, in English and German. The children grow up as in a multilingual family: with German educators and English native speakers who consistently stick to their language.
2011
Public funding
Until 2011, the centre was financed entirely by parental contributions. From August 2011, the City of Leverkusen included the daycare in its needs planning – since then, there has been public funding under KiBiz. After-school care still receives no public funding and is paid for by the parents alone.
